I was surprised to read that your cookies have hydrated oil in them. For a fitness snack I would not purchase them because of that reason, any plans to remove the oil?

We have formulated all of our bars and cookies to contain as little hydrogenated oil as possible, which is very close to zero. While we are seeking ways to reduce the trans fatty acids (TFA) in our products to absolute zero, it is not currently possible given the nature of some of the ingredients.  The FDA proposed that labels include information on TFAs after 2006.

According to the proposed law by the FDA, none of our products will have to claim TFAs. All of our products have such a small amount of TFAs (less than 0.5g) that the new labeling laws consider it 0. The 2005 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee Report states "Foods high in trans fatty acids tend to raise blood cholesterol. These foods include those high in partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, such as many hard margarines and shortenings. Foods with a high amount of these ingredients include some commercially fried foods and some bakery goods."

The point the FDA is stressing is to avoid foods high in hydrogenated oils, which does not include our products. Ultimately, the 2005 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee Report agrees with the FDA advisory committee and the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) report, concluding that the "Trans fatty acid consumption by all population groups should be kept as low as possible, which is about 1 percent of energy intake or less."

Using the same 2000 calorie diet, one could still consume multiple Apex bars or cookies daily and easily comply with this recommendation. In fact, consuming 4 Apex bars or cookies would be under the 1% mark. By comparison, a glass of 2% milk has 0.13g and four ounces of rib eye steak has 1.44g of TFAs. For most women in this country, milk and beef represent the primary dietary sources of calcium, iron and vitamin B6.
