I have heard slow reps burn more calories but does the tempo really matter when it comes to gaining muscle and burning calories?

Fast repetitions are beneficial for sports-specific activities such as boxing, football, basketball, etc. There is an old myth that still circulates in the gym that faster repetitions will not lead to muscle gain. This is false. Any kind of resistance training can lead to muscle gain, depending on the experience of the exerciser and the more volume they can lift, regardless of repetition speed.

1. i like static sets. bicep curls: weight in hand with forearms paralell to the floor.
hold this position several seconds
2. I have heard that fast reps take more advantage of momentum so a slower pace may force your muscles to work harder for any given weight. Anyway, for muscle gain what seems to be important is to work to failure or very close to it to signal your body it needs to build more muscle.
