1. My follow up question to this is:
I have a fairly sendentary lifestyle thanks to long work hours/commuting. I make an effort to take the stairs and walk around whenever possible, but some days I just can't get my calorie burn significantly higher than the target (i.e. trying to burn more). So that leaves me with the solution of eating less. My current calorie target is 1200, and in order to lower that how low is TOO low?

2. Erin, I've read it's dangerous to go below 1200 calories.
1. Get a bodyball to sit on in place of your office chair. It forces you to sit up straighter and you can flex your legs while you sit or adjust your position. It helps burn more calories while you're sitting! Give it a shot!!
2. Have a stair goal for the day. Every few hours have yourself do a few flights.
3. Take a "working lunch" and then exercise during the allotted lunch hour by walking at a fast pace, or going to the gym, if possible.
4. Get more protein in your diet. Studies have shown that not only does it fill you up more than carbs or fat, but it also burns more calories during digestion, compared to carbs or fat.
5. On the weekends, it'd be critical to get as high a deficit as possible to make up for those off days. Work towards 1000 calorie deficit or more on these days. Remember that you will lose a half a lb after a 1750 calorie deficit. Right there you could be losing a half a pound a week.
6. Also, add strength training on the weekend. Increasing your muscle mass will in turn increase your resting metabolism.
Goodluck!
